Aikaa on vierähtänyt sopivasti, joten postaan omat MM-kuvani tänne. Nämä ovat yhtä lukuunottamatta kaikki kuvia, joita ei käytetty lehdessä. Kuvasin juhlintaa Tampereella sunnuntai-iltana, tämän lisäksi olimme Kauppatorilla maanantaina. Alla lyhyt tiivistys näistä päivistä.
Sunnuntaina alkuillasta kiertelimme tamperelaisia kisakatsomoja ja kartoitimme yleisiä fiiliksiä. Tarkoituksena oli tehdä kakkoskannen avausjuttu kisafiilistelystä ja kuvata viisi erilaista faniporukkaa. Kuville oli varattu etusivu, uutisaukeama sekä ns. kakkoskansi. Toimittajan kanssa kuitenkin pian totesimme, että oli järkevämpää yksinkertaisesti tehdä juttu reportaasihengessä. Sunnuntaina tilanne oli mielenkiintoinen siinä mielessä, että ensimmäisen painoksen mennessä kiinni oli ottelu vielä käynnissä. Toiseen, myöhempään painokseen sain kuvattua tuoretta kuvaa välittömästi Keskustorilta, joka täyttyi ihmisistä noin puolessa tunnissa pelin päätyttyä. Kuvat torilta lähetin kamerasta suoraan toimitusjärjestelmään Mifi-mobiilireitittimen avulla. Langattomasti lähetettäessä kuvatiedostot täytyi pitää niin pieninä kuin mahdollista, mutta resoluutio riitti sanomalehtikäyttöön silti hyvin. Kamera sai luonnollisesti vettä niskaansa suihkulähteellä, mutta siitä ei koitunut mitään ongelmia. Vasen silmäni ei sen sijaan ottanut vettä vastaan yhtä hyvin, enkä nähnyt kuvatessani sillä juuri mitään.
Maanantaina lähdimme hyvissä ajoin kuvaamaan joukkueen saapumista Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentälle. Aikataulut venyivät ja lopulta kone oli myöhässä kaksi tuntia. Kompurointien ja kaiken muun sekavuuden jälkeen pikaisesti keskustaan ja kuvien purku samaan konsernin kuuluvassa toimituksessa. Kuppi kahvia, banaani ja kohti Kauppatoria. Noin 40 minuuttia ennen virallisen juhlan alkamista koko Kauppatorin alue oli täysin tukossa ja näytti siltä, ettemme pääse ollenkaan lavan läheisyyteen ajoissa. Tunkeminen ja pönkeäminen tuotti kuitenkin tulosta ja ehdimme paikalle. Hieman ennen juhlien päättymistä pois konsernilehden toimitukseen tekemään kuvia. Mifi ei toiminut koko illan aikana, enkä saanut mitään lähetettyä Kauppatorilta. Toimituksessa nopeat kuvavalinnat ja kuvankäsittelyt, jonka jälkeen hommat oli hoidettu.
Kuvia kahdelta päivältä kertyi satoja ja nyt katsottuna harmittaa se, ettei editointivaiheessa ollut riittävästi aikaa miettiä lehteen meneviä kuvavalintoja.

Some cross-country skiing before the winter is over. Assigment for sports photography workshop at Uni. And as you can see I didn’t manage to shoot any of the actual action. Instead I was interested in everything else. Well, that happens if you don’t concentrate.

Today I found myself at Kalevankangas cemetary. Even though I’ve been living in Tampere since 2002, today was the first time I visited the place. There is a small hill where random wanderer is suprised to be granted with a pretty nice view over the rooftops of Nekala. For half an hour there was an older man just standing, not budging an inch. Occasionally he lifted his binoculars, but other than that he did nothing. After taking few shots I went up to the top of the hill and asked what he was doing. He replied that he was up to nothing special, looking at birds but mainly just standing there. I liked him instantly.

Out of today’s and yesterday’s photos I’ve established a theory: Elderly people’s vast and impeccable life-experience allows them to position themselves on perfect lighting whenever they know they’re being photographed… This gentleman however seems slightly undedicated how to react on this sudden spotlight.

Quick practise fix in studio. No reason, just trying to evolve. This frame just caugh my eye and here it is, but I doubt that it will ever end anywhere besides our blog. The neck is poorly lit, but I think the face is pretty ok.

I’ve never identified myself being comfortable working with studio lights, but lately I’ve found the stuff interesting. Beyond the basic picture, there is so much to learn in details. And that makes some pictures stand out. And sorry for the gigantic size but I shot only portraits.

Few shots from POLAMK. I truly wished that the place would have been more like the Police Academy in the movies (you know, characters like trigger-happy Tackleberry and that screaming dude), but unfortunately this wasn´t the case – unless they did a good job hiding it all. And as always, I got excited and went too close while they were training the use of physical force and was almost overrun by a enormous target man. But if you need the angles what can you do.

When it comes to my recent activities I´ve been quite busy with my MA and doing some occasional freelancing here and there. The winter seems to go on and on and I´m quite fed up with it. Enough of this frozen Blashyrkh kindom.

Should have posted these a long time ago, but what can you do if you’re born lazy. Anyway, few shots from Kalevan Kisat in Kajaani last summer. If I remember correctly, these ones never made anywhere – except the one with javelin thrower Teemu Wirkkala.

In general shooting sports is strange business. Many times it seems to be bit tedious and repetitive – there are the obvious shots that you should be able to take. On the other hand sport games are full of drama and variety of emotions, and it is all about the decisive moment. You either got it or you don’t. And there is also a huge challenge to be able to capture something interesting or fresh.
