Six shots show no mercy

So, here it is. We have roamed the streets and now we are back, battle bruised and barrels still smoking. All Partakuva members were bound to take part and so we did.  And we are happy to say that there were two other people taking part in this challenge. That is two people more than we expected! Thanks folks! Links to these efforts are below:

Hese took his photos in Strasbourg, check them out here.

And Lintsi did her shooting in Tornio, you´ll find the shots here.

Below you´ll find our efforts

In my face street photography

Brutal assigment, thanks to Konsta. I noticed that I’ve drifted pretty far mentally from street photography during the recent years, whole thing was really difficult. But this is good stuff – failing makes you humble. This kind of stuff should be done weekly.

And why I think I failed? The reason is that I was just too polite. I wasn´t pressing on the situations, not going close enough and I was hesitating too much to take the picture. Also I managed to press the button just a little bit too early or  slightly too late. The worst thing was that after I took the photo, something interesting happened and of course I couldn’t shoot that. Most dissapointed I am with the last shot, my timing was totally off. But I do like the one with woman covering her face. Technically it is pretty clumsy but I think it works with the feeling.

Ironically, all the time I was taking these photos a certain passage of a certain Eminem-tune (of all artists?!) from couple of years back rang in my head, it goes something like this: “If you only have one shot do not miss the change to blow.”

Well, that’s basically all I did, miss and miss and miss. God damn it was hard, why did I put myself through this? The santa claus shot had all the ingredients in theory, but in practice the camera adjustments fell apart. The shooting-picture and the pole walking shots seemed funnier in my head than they do here. I have no excuse for the other ones. I found myself hesitating with every shot. Many way better shots than these just walked away while I thought to myself that something better will come along. It never did.

Konsta

Like Jarkko said, this one was brutal. It was a beautiful day at the university restaurant when Konsta suddenly walked past me with his turkey pasta and stopped. I never thought what he would say next would literally change my whole view of photography. Something like two weeks later I was hanging around in the city center, having a bad hangover (thanks guys) and trying to focus my eyes to people in the freezing cold weather. I’m not going to get the grand prize with these shots, but instead I learned something very important. Street photography is damn powerful, but you have to look, be bold and live in the moment. When the shot is in front of you, you can’t just let it go. It will never come back. If there was one photographer that made me study photography, it was Boogie who still reminds me of both Cartier-Bresson’s and Batman. I always wanted to be like him, know my surroundings capture those decisive moments. Konsta’s challenge made me realize I have to stop concentrating on the technical aspects and start looking, breathing and living the city I’m living in. That’s how Boogie gets his shots. Thanks guys! This was shameful but great fun too.
