Few portraits of Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra’s first violin player Dennis Kim as he was just starting his new job. Quite many times I try to previsualize the situation and this time it turned out to be pretty much what I had expected. I had this idea of doing classical black&white portraits with some dramatic lighting. Yeah, nothing new but I still like the results. The setup was simple, a transmitter, one speedlight and a semi-large reflector.

  1. I would like to say something critical for once but I can’t seem to come up with anything..?

  2. First of all, strong images!
I’m interested in why you chose two very similar portraits for the compilation? Personally I would have kept the big one to the right but changed the smaller one on the left with a more tightly cropped frame, or even just a detail in the instrument/fingers/face.

  3. Thanks Beni! And a very good point too. Not really sure actually. Although these two shots are very similar, for me they have different feeling. The big one is more introverted and the lower left is like he is pretending to play. I don’t know if you see the difference but I think that has something to do with putting them both here.
But. The original reason for this post was to share some of my feelings about choosing photos, by me and by others. As you know, sometimes the people doing the layout make different choices than the photographer. So was the case with this article (the top-left ended up in the newspaper). But I failed to write about it because I couldn’t articulate what I wanted to say. So in that sense it is a failed post!
